Oracle NetSuite Open Hosts 1st College Exhibition

The “Big Squash” will pit Cal Berkeley vs Stanford in a special college exhibition match on the tournament’s glittering all-glass Show Court Sunday September 26th starting at 2:00pm.

This exhibition match is part of a larger movement that intends to bring awareness around squash to the region, to families interested in a lifelong sport, and to Cal and Stanford officials. Both schools have club teams that aspire to eventual Varsity status. More than 35 colleges and universities have varsity squash programs in the USA, while more than 50 other schools have club teams.

The college match is the idea of Tournament Producer and Director John Nimick, who also serves as Chair of the College Squash Association. “While the scheduling for the 2021 Oracle NetSuite Open changed significantly due to the pandemic, the PSA and I have wanted to explore a daylight session at Embarcadero Plaza for years. College squash is on the rise and, as an exhibition, The Big Squash will give a boost to both teams. With Stanford’s Women’s program back up to Varsity status and Cal Berkeley’s strength as a club team, creating a match between these great rivals seemed like a natural fit,” says Nimick.
